Dropped my car off at 2-2:05pm. At 3:11 I received a call from the same guy who checked me in saying I needed all 4 spark plugs and ignition coils replaced, and it would cost $1100 At 3:11 I received a call from the same guy who checked me in saying I needed all 4 spark plugs and ignition coils replaced, and it would cost $1100. Gave very little info beyond that so I had to ask several questions, and I felt he was a bit evasive (or maybe annoyed, or in a rush). It was noticeable to me because I'm used to the people there always being very thorough and detailed in their explanations. I said go ahead and do the job, but based on this whole interaction and the cost, my gut told me this wasn't right, so after hanging up I did some research. I learned that replacing both of these parts is a very quick, easy job for those who know what they're doing. Easily done in 1 hour. I also learned how much the parts should cost. All of this was fairly recent info from Kia forums. Then I called a different Lou Fusz dealer to ask their ballpark rate for this job and was told "around $800" (they were unsure of exact Kia parts cost since their dealership focuses on a different make of car). I asked what they charge for labor alone, and he said $195/hr. I didn't tell him my $1100 quote was from another Lou Fusz location because I didn't want to put him in an awkward position, but after roughly breaking down the cost for everything, he was unsure how my quote came to $1100. At 4:13pm (1 hour and 2 min. after I received the diagnosis call), I was informed my car was ready for pickup. My car was there for barely over 2 hours total, clearly only took 1 hour to fix (as my research and calling around said it should), yet upon pick up I see on the itemized bill I was charged for 3 hours of labor at $200/hour. The parts cost was in line with my research, but 3 hours of labor? I challenged this, noting my car was only there for 2 hours, timestamps show it took 1 hour to fix, and the other quote I received and my research made it clear this is a quick job. I said including extra time for the diagnosis pushed it to 2 hours of labor max, and that's being generous assuming that a full hour of diagnostic time was even needed. The same guy I'd been dealing with responded "we block a 3 hour job for this", meaning I am charged for 3 hours of labor no matter how long it takes. I asked why they block 3 hours for a job that seems to clearly be a 1 hour job for a skilled mechanic. He seemed surprised by my knowledge and as soon as I told him the other place I got a quote from was another Lou Fusz dealer, he offered to take $100 off my bill for 1/2 hour of the labor. Frankly I don't feel this was enough since my car was only in their garage for 2 hours total, but I accepted it because I didn't want to get into a battle. I told him I'm a lifelong Lou Fusz customer, which he said he was aware of (I suppose seeing my whole history in your computer system). I've bought all my cars from you and have had all my oil changes and fixes done by Lou Fusz on each of those cars, and I know this is not how you have always operated. I told him if their policy is now to charge customers for a certain amount of labor whether it takes that long or not, then they need to tell people that upfront, because otherwise what you're doing feels shady. People should know what they will be paying for. I, personally, don't don't feel it's righ to pay for time/labor that isn't needed, especially since you are seemingly over-booking the time allotted for jobs. You are the experts, you all know xxxx well that this particular fix doesn't take a skilled mechanic 3 hours. I'm disappointed and frankly unsure if I want to do business with you in the future. For about 30 years I have trusted Lou Fusz, but now I don't and it's upsetting. I still feel ripped off, my total bill was $1065 even with the discount. It seems the other estimate I got was actually right- based on the true parts cost on my bill ($397.08) and figuring 2 full hours of labor that covers diagnostic time, the cost should be right around $800 with tax.
