While I did not purchase a vehicle from them, Philip and Lou were both great to work with and they did everything they could to help - just found a different car elsewhere. Lou were both great to work with and they did everything they could to help - just found a different car elsewhere. More
Buyer Beware Louie Dominion Deals on Wheels. In late July I bought a fifteen-year-old Lexus RX300 with 182,000 miles on it from Deals on Wheels on Pipestone. T Louie Dominion Deals on Wheels. In late July I bought a fifteen-year-old Lexus RX300 with 182,000 miles on it from Deals on Wheels on Pipestone. They were asking $5500 and had just lowered it from $6000. I got in it and drove it and it was like riding on a cloud. I think it my first time ever in a Lexus. Super-nice ride. So I was kind of bewitched by the idea of a Lexus with no car payment, and I bought it, even though the check engine light was on and it had an oil leak. Well I should have done my homework. Fifty-five hundred bucks is a fair price for a fifteen-year-old Lexus with no known issues, but with an oil leak and the check engine light on, they were asking too much. But I paid it. Stupid me. I drove it for a few weeks and had no problems, but that oil leak, though barely perceptible, was there and I thought I'd better have it fixed, and also have the check engine light looked at. So I took the Lexus to a corner garage here in my neighborhood and they kept it for a week, checking it out. (I'm not very well-versed in Car Talk, so forgive my poor explanations of things mechanical.) The oil leak, it turned out, was because the seals had been put in upside down. Seals for the valves, I believe. Also, a gasket needed to be replaced. There were some holes in the exhaust system that they welded up. A coupling in the exhaust had to be replaced. At first they thought that one of the oxygen sensors might be bad, which would explain the check engine light. However after a lot of testing, it was determined that all three catalytic converters were burnt up and would eventually have to be replaced, along with each oxygen sensor. But that's a $3000 job and they didn't seem to want to tackle that right away. Said it would run, but the bad converters might affect my gas mileage. So I thanked them and gave them $900 and I had my Lexus back. Took it to Michigan City later that week. On the way back, before the state line, it threw a rod. Engine needed to be replaced. The tow-truck guy in New Buffalo, when he heard that I had purchased the vehicle only a month before, suggested that I call Deals on Wheels and see what they might do for me. So I did. I must tell you, they were very quick to respond. They came and got the car in New Buffalo and towed it to their facility in Benton Harbor, where they replaced the engine. I asked them to take a look at the catalytic converters, but I don't think they did. I got the thing back yesterday for $2400. When I picked it up the service manager was very friendly and nice, told me the car drives great, he had taken it on a test drive himself, and he hoped everything worked out from here. He did not seem all that confident that it would. Then as I was waiting the guy who sold me the car came out to talk to me. He apologized for everything and told me to call him if I needed anything. He gave me no reassurance that everything was going to be fine with my car. Then the mechanic brought the car to me and just kind of shrugged and wished me luck. Geez, that's not what I wanted to hear. I still have a bad feeling about this whole thing. I own a Lexus on which I've spent $8400 and which still has faulty catalytic converters. Yes I made a mistake in buying the thing in the first place, but the folks at Louie Dominion's Deals on Wheels might be a little short on integrity for not looking more closely at both the original oil leak, and the check engine light problem. If you're thinking about buying a used car from anybody, do your homework first, and consider my little story here. This is what can happen. The folks at Deals on Wheels did give me a loaner car for the week or so that they had my Lexus. That was very, very handy. More
