Brought a 1996 Miata in for engine not starting, agreed to pay for a diagnosis at ~$160. Tech disassembled the engine in a detailed diagnostic and suggested the timing belt was loose and jumping, leading t to pay for a diagnosis at ~$160. Tech disassembled the engine in a detailed diagnostic and suggested the timing belt was loose and jumping, leading to starting issues. Mazda quoted me in excess of $2000 to change a timing belt, charging 8.5 hours of labor. I declined service and the bill arrived at over $300 for a diagnosis. I immediately disputed the bill as we had agreed on $160 figure. Carrie Hoffman then began to argue with me that the diagnosis was much more detailed than a basic diagnosis would cover in which I had to explain that she is required to notify me for additional work that changes the agreed upon service. She became belligerent and finally yielded after repeating my last sentence multiple times. I told her I would be returning the loaner vehicle by close of business that day but then declined to release the vehicle to the tow truck driver after the bill had been paid, preventing me from retrieving my vehicle. It took 10 hours to resolve with insurance and 3 towing companies. If that wasn't bad enough I performed the timing belt change for $150 and 2 hours that same week. The car still fails to run. This is by far the worst dealer experience I have ever had, surpassing a time I was literally ignored trying to buy a car at a different dealer. I am still contemplating an FTC complaint for bait and switch practices, pending the results of this survey. More
