I understand that you were in to have brake work done and we have technicians that follow the manufacturers procedures when taking care of these safety related systems. In our procedures, for all safety related systems, we thoroughly inspect each component and make recommendations to each customer. We have high service standards and train our employees to treat customers with the utmost respect. We pulled and checked all service records prior to this response and the service that was performed on the vehicle made sure it was operating properly. As with all components of high mileage vehicles, they have the potential to fail. The previous owner of the Explorer decided to remain anonymous and we honored their request. As for the history of the vehicle, we show history files and documentation available. I apologize for the inconvenience. We train our staff to be effective and efficient. The service records would of course show it was operating properly. The dealer did not know the vehicle had the problem until I test drove it. They put the vehicle on a computer and pulled up the codes. Misfires on cylinder 4 and 8 pointing to the coil packs. The condition does not present itself until the vehicle is put under load (acceleration). They wouldn't know that because they didn't put it under load. I found out on my way home with the car. New code pointed to the number 8 cylinder. Looking in the engine, it was clear that the wrong one was changed out. Shame on me for not double checking their work before leaving. Then again, I shouldn't have to. You state 'as with all components of high mileage vehicles, they have the potential to fail'. This I recognize. And when they do, replacing the correct ones would be a good idea. The salesman used the previous owner as a sales tool (the owner being another salesman's dad) saying the vehicle was garage kept, etc. I asked if I could ask him some history questions on the vehicle and it was indicated that would be OK. That was BEFORE the paper signing. I emailed on multiple occassions if I could pose questions and have them answered through the salesperson's son. NO REPLIES. That was the poorest part of this whole transaction. Come on now... 'Honoring their request' makes it sound like it was just some customer who wanted to be left alone. This wa a salesman's dad. Geez. Yes there is documentation and files on the vehicle. All vehicles have files/documentation (pretty broad term). Not all documentation answers all questions. Good things: I did enjoy my visit. Nice people. They did hold the vehicle while I came in from out of town. The vehicle was a great price. I even understand a service mix up on parts. On the flip side: They could have gotten my questions answered or even a reply to go away. Also, upon learning they took a working part (good coil pack on cylinder 3) out of the vehicle, they could have sent me one to replace the one that should have been replaced.
