A word of sage advice to potential car buyers: avoid Jeff Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington, NC at any cost. This is a company that exemplifies every negative cliché about car dealerships you have ever heard. Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington, NC at any cost. This is a company that exemplifies every negative cliché about car dealerships you have ever heard. Today we had the absolute worst experience that I have ever had buying a car and I’ve been around for 70 years. I thought I had seen it all, but our experience today was in a class by itself. We went there two days ago to test drive one of their vehicles after shopping around online for weeks. Today we returned ready to purchase the vehicle pending negotiation. I will not bore you with details, but we drove a pretty hard bargain. At that point they called in one of their managers, a guy named Reuben, to try to close the deal. Bottom line is that about 70% of whatever came out of his mouth was a lie. Every experienced car buyer knows that car dealerships make their money in part by tying you in knots with clever math, hidden fees, and other financial shenanigans that creates the illusion that they are giving you a great deal, but this dealership took all that to a new level. For instance, we bargained to try to get them to waive the so-called “doc (documentation) fee” of $749, which for dealerships is just a way of squeezing buyers for a bit of extra profit. That they refused was not unexpected, but it was entirely unnecessary to tell us that we had always paid this when purchasing a car (which is definitively not the case), and that if they waived it for only some purchasers it could lead to a discrimination lawsuit. That is complete xx. They wanted to charge for several add-ons that should be part of the MSRP, and those were right there on the bill of sale in black and white, but they told us that those were not extra charges. It would be generous to call this gaslighting. We were prepared to walk if we could not agree on a mutually agreeable price, and initially we said we were going to do that when they wouldn’t bargain any further. But then we stood there in their showroom in full view of all the sales personnel present. After about 5 minutes we decided to accept their offer, we informed the salesperson that had been helping us, we sat down and shook on the deal, and we started to do the paperwork. At that point Reuben came over and informed us that he had bad news: another potential buyer had showed up and taken the vehicle we wanted for a test drive and if they wanted it, it was theirs. Having reached an agreement and already started the paperwork, we protested on the grounds that we had already started the sale process. Reuben basically said too bad. We then sat there for 45 minutes cooling our heals while our salesperson and Reuben disappeared. Eventually they came back and informed us that they intended to sell the vehicle to the other customer. If you are in the market for a new car, go anywhere but this car dealership. More
