Ripped-off at the Service Department? Service #1 FACTS: My 2014 Accord with less than 31,000 miles would often not start. When I brought it in for repair on August 12, 2019 I told them tha Service #1 FACTS: My 2014 Accord with less than 31,000 miles would often not start. When I brought it in for repair on August 12, 2019 I told them that the positive battery cable was loose/could not be tightened and this was probably the cause. I was correct and they replaced this one (1) battery cable. Cost was $97.21 for the part + $289.00 for labor (2 hours @ $144.50 per hour) + $42.65 for “Shop Supplies” + $10.92 taxes = $439.77. I had a $30 coupon that lowered the cost to $409.77. (Please be sure to read Service #2 below.) Service #1 OPINIONS: Their charge to replace 1 battery cable is excessive; I’m convinced I was ripped-off by Honda of Fort Worth. The cable charge of $97.21 is high (it can be bought online for about $60) but their mark-up is reasonable. I take issue with the 2 hours of labor charged (almost $300). I very seriously doubt it took an experienced mechanic 2 hours to complete the work, especially since I had diagnosed the problem for them. The cable has 3 connections to the car. Two are easily accessible and I think these 2 could be removed and replaced in 15 minutes. The 3rd connection is more difficult as the cable must be threaded tightly through the engine. I bet this could be done by the dealer’s mechanic in 1:15 maximum for 1:30 total to complete the job. That’s an overcharge of at least $72.50 (1/2 hour @ $144.50 per hour). The $42.65 for “Shop Supplies” is absolute BS, just another way to get in my wallet. Maybe this covered the cost of screws to screw me. Total overcharge, I think, about $115. More: I discussed my experience with the dealer rep, Mr. Arredondo. Of course, he thought the charge was reasonable. He seemed to think it was a big deal that they used a new Honda part but it was the original Honda part that failed prematurely. He offered to send me a check for $42.65 but only if I agreed to not write a “bad” review. I declined, telling him to keep his money, I would write this review. Service #2 FACTS: After 2+ weeks of no starting problems, the car would not start on September 2. I suspected a faulty starter and took it to Tom Guess Auto Repair. They replaced the starter (lifetime warranty) for a total cost of $632.38. Before giving them the okay to do the work, I phoned Honda of Fort Worth to get their estimate. Elizabeth in the service department quoted me a price of $903 for a new starter with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. So the dealer’s cost would have been $270 (42%) more than the independent garage for a starter with an inferior warranty. Service #2 OPINIONS: The 2nd experience validates my opinion that I was ripped-off when I was charged $409.77 for one battery cable. I was ripped-off once, but not a second time! Anyone who would pay Honda of Fort Worth $270 more for a new starter is a fool. (I was a fool to pay $409.77 for a battery cable.) Their charges are excessive. Unless you are very wealthy and/or enjoy wasting money, find a good independent garage to do your repair work. You’ll save a lot of money plus support a small business, not a corporation. More
