It is just one more disappointing experience with them. They really don't care about retaining customers. I was at Barker today. They did not have the Toyota wiper inserts I need for the inspection appointment tomorrow. I found myself having to call Checkered Flag Toyota, who has plenty, and I will have to go up there to get them. While checking with Checkered Flag, I learned that batteries are on sale. I asked Barker if they would sell the battery for that price tomorrow while my car is in their shop for the inspection. Barker will not do so. They said their own sale starts next week, and I would have to come back next week for it unless I have a coupon from the other dealership. It isn't a coupon; it is a sale. You don't need a coupon at Checkered Flag for the sale. It's a TruStart Toyota battery, and the sale price at Checkered Flag is the same price as Barker's sale next week. I get free inspections because I bought the cars at Barker, but their service is disappointing. You really do not feel appreciated or valued as a customer. More
We purchased our first Toyota from Priority, but stopped going there due to "less than helpful" service people. But, we love Toyotas. We took the chance and tried Charles Barker Automotive and have not gone going there due to "less than helpful" service people. But, we love Toyotas. We took the chance and tried Charles Barker Automotive and have not gone anywhere since. Our 1992 Corolla lasted 250,000 miles before we donated it. We found Jesse Cook in the parking lot while we were viewing cars at several dealers. He was not the typical pushy salesman. He was friendly, took time to answer our questions and even gave us his cell number if had others later. He won us over. We bought a 2008 RAV4 from Charles Barker because of Jesse. And, returned this weekend to buy a 2012 Tacoma from him too. When it is time to replace our son's 99 Corolla, we will seek out Jesse again. He is honest, caring and makes us feel he really wants us to be happy with our purchases. He goes above and beyond with his customers and represents this dealership in a classy way. We have no problem referring friends and neighbors to him when looking for cars. And, the service department at Charles Barker is great too. They are quick to help, get the work done when they say they will, and know how to treat their customers. Derrick is our representative on the service team, and didn't keep us waiting when we noticed a problem with the new Tacoma or when servicing my RAV4. The team cares about their customers and treats all with respect no matter if the car is an old one like a 1992 or a new 2012. Charles Barker Automotive is a cut above all other dealers in Tidewater and has our business for good. Cudos to the management and all involved there. More

I'm not a great "haggler", I'm pretty nonconfrontational, and every time in a car dealership, i feel like i'm getting screwed six different ways. Not so with Charles Barker. The entire process was amazingly no pressure and very straightforward. I had been looking for a used Toyota Sienna to replace our 5-year old Sienna that had been totaled in an accident. I found one listed on cars.com at Charles Barker for about $2500 less than comparable models were selling elsewhere. I was skeptical--deal seemed to good to be true. But I drove 90 miles from Richmond to Virginia beach to check it out. they had the Sienna waiting up front for us. It had been cleaned and detailed immaculately. I was really surprised--for the low price I had expected to find some unlisted defect or damage, but the car was in amazing shape. The only thing we saw: my father-in-law pointed out that the treads on the two rear tires looked low. I asked them about that, not expecting any concessions since the car was already priced so low. But Jesse, our salesman immediately said "yeah, you're right…let's see what we can do about that." And they took $500 off the price to cover the cost of two new tires. No haggling, arm wrestling or anything. Of course we were offered the extended warranty--had to do the whole routine where you go talk with the warranty salesman in his windowless office--but even he had a very low-key, no pressure presentation (which I respectfully declined). Overall, the entire car-buying transaction far exceeded my expectations. Really felt like these guys respected me, and were actually committed to treating customers with dignity. Our salesman Jesse was amazing: professional and helpful, but never once said anything that felt like pressure to buy the car. His manager Jeff Zulli was equally friendly and helpful. And outside of the warranty, we weren't offered ANY additional products or services to buy, which was great. The whole experience really changed my entire outlook on buying cars. I would enthusiastically encourage anyone looking at buying used or new Toyotas in the Virginia Beach area to visit Charles Barker. I have no affiliation with this dealership whatsoever. I am simply a customer who had a great car-buying experience, and I hope this review might help others to have a similar experience. More

This is the second car we have purchased through the dealership - the first being a Tundra, which was bought 10 years ago (and we are still driving)! The sales lady that sold my husband the truck is st dealership - the first being a Tundra, which was bought 10 years ago (and we are still driving)! The sales lady that sold my husband the truck is still with Charles Barker and my husband took a moment to say hello. As cliche as it may sound...it was positively a "no hassle - best price" experience for my husband and I. We test drove on Monday evening, returned Tuesday morning at 10, financed through the dealership, and drove our new Toyota 4runner off the lot around 11. Could it even get any easier than that???? It was truly a terrific experience!!! We will certainly recommend the dealership and if/when we are in the market for another new vehicle - Charles Barker is definitely where we will go! More

I had new brakes put on my 2006 Highlander. A week later my breaks started squeaking. When I brought it in I was told my rooters were bad. Now, shouldn't the mechanic that changed my front and rear brakes my breaks started squeaking. When I brought it in I was told my rooters were bad. Now, shouldn't the mechanic that changed my front and rear brakes noticed that the rooters were bad? So, I paid for new rooters. Two weeks later, my breaks are still squeaking. When I spoke to Mr. Williams he said it may be because of all the rain we have been having. He recommended that I wait a week so they can dry out. So, I did. My breaks still squeaked. I made an appointment for yesterday at 1600 to have them looked at. I arrived at 1530. After about 20 minutes of the 30 minute drive there my breaks stopped squeaking. When I arrived, they did not squeak! I left my vehicle overnight so that it could cool down. Supposedly, you have a shuttle service available, but, what you fail to inform people is that it is only available certain times!!! I have NEVER used your shuttle service so, did not know the hours it is available. At 1615 I was told the person was gone for the day. Mr. Williams did ask the service manager if there was someone that could give me a ride to my husbands place of employment about 10 miles away. But, I was told there is noone available to give me a ride. I walked several miles until my husband got off work at 1630 and picked me up. Just for your information there is not a sidewalk going all the way down Laskin Road! thank God that I am a 55 year old woman that is only 50 lbs overweight and not 100lbs!If my car would have been fixed correctly the first time I would not have had this terrible experience. After I had called the dealer several times today I was notified that me car is not squeaking. So, I told them to lock the keys in the car. I have purchased two vehicles from you within the last 6 years. I will NEVER purchase another one there! I will be sure to let the military members I work with know exactly how I was treated by Charles Barker Toyota! More
