Example: I had a small nail in my one year old (12,000 mile) car tire. I brought it in to have the tire repaired. I was told it couldn't be repaired and I had to buy a new tire. My feeling was that the small nail was in the tread, not the side wall, and it should be repairable. Their position was, it was too close to the sidewall. After doing a lot of research I learned that the DOT sets repair requirements for everyone in the USA. According to the DOT, "any puncture that is in the side wall or shoulder, or shoulder to the side wall area of the tire is considered a non-repairable puncture". The shoulder is in the tread area adjoining the side wall. If they would have said the DOT / government rules dictated what was repairable it would have helped me embrace this a little better. More
