I was cross shopping the Taos and Tiguan at Emich in mid-November. I was looking for a specific feature set and color for a Taos, and it didn't appear Emich VW had it in inventory so I test drove a sim mid-November. I was looking for a specific feature set and color for a Taos, and it didn't appear Emich VW had it in inventory so I test drove a similar 2022 Taos model the sales rep identified. I found one that did meet my specs on the lot that the sales rep (Doug McGuirk) hadn't found for me through his inventory search before I arrived. I negotiated a price, and Emich required a "non-refundable" $500 deposit to pick it up two days later (For context, I had purchased 3 cars myself and referred 4 other people who purchased over the last 7 years, so they knew me well). I did more research on the Taos and the driving experiences were mixed, so I asked Doug if I could take the new one I found out for a bit before our scheduled purchase appointment. His reply was to ask if I was going to "take it for sure" because Emich was selling the Taos for MSRP and didn't want to put miles on it. I had to remind him that I wanted to feel confident about the purchase. Fast forward, I was contacted on the eve of the purchase by a competing dealer who offered me $1k under what Emich's price all else equal. Furthermore, and most importantly, they (McDonald VW) allowed me to sign a borrowed car agreement to spend a few hours evaluating the drive and think about how it would be to live with the car. I contacted Emich in response and asked them if they could do anything to close the gap price wise, and their position was very simple and very non-collaborative. They said that I signed at a specific price, and if I didn't purchase, they would keep my $500 and release the car to sell to someone else. I would have paid a little more to Emich to do business with them again, but not $1k more after being treated the way they treated me after years of patronage and referrals. I really appreciated how McDonald VW treated me with respect and will do business with them going forward. More
