Vern and the staff at Oakland Toyota are super awesome. I had a check engine light come on before going in to work, and went in as a walk in. They finally let up on that, and fine, I was new and naive car owner. In December 2022, I brought my car in for an actual issue (engine ticking sound) and 6 month service. I was told that a wheel bearing needed to be replaced, and in the process of doing do, my brake rotors were found to have hot spots and so both they and the pads would need to be replaced, a $1000 service that was not covered despite my car being under warranty and only having around 40k miles. I went through with the service. The engine noise issue was not fixed AND there was a new vibrating issue and I was forced to cancel a road trip. I took my car back in, did a road test with a service tech to show them the issues, and left my car with them. I later found out that the new noise was because the brakes had been poorly installed and parts were rubbing against each other. In fixing this, they also found that they had forgotten to install the brake shims, which to me felt like a potential safety issue. On top of all of this, I was told that the original issue was due to carbon buildup in my engine and that I could pay them $500 for a carbon cleaning and $125 for an engine computer upgrade, both with no guarantee that either would fix the issue. I was also told to start buying Premium fuel since it has a lower carbon content and to rev my engine into the red once in a while to cause explosions to clear out the carbon. I asked why the engine computer update wasn't covered by my warranty and was told that the powertrain warranty had expired 3 weeks earlier. When I pushed and asked why it hadn't been done when my car was brought in a month earlier and still under warranty, they put up a fuss. Finally I got them to cover the update, which did not fix the engine issue. They also covered fixing the unnecessary work that they messed up in the first place. From research after the fact, it seems the number one way to prevent carbon buildup is regular and proper oil and filter changes, which I come here every 6 months for, despite my low mileage - another knock against their work, in my view. Overall I feel extremely distrustful of this shop's attention to detail and care for my vehicle now, and I'm still fairly frustrated by this experience. I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future, despite this shop being less than a mile from where I live. More
