Coast GMC has been my only maintenance choice for the last two years. I’ve always been very satisfied with the care and service provided. My latest visit was anything but satisfactory. On February 5, I last two years. I’ve always been very satisfied with the care and service provided. My latest visit was anything but satisfactory. On February 5, I made an appointment at Coast GMC for an oil change, tire rotation and to reset a warning indicator on the dashboard. The Service Agent told me they would “run a diagnostic” on the warning indicator. After waiting more than three hours, a Service Agent told me they couldn’t reset the indicator light on the dashboard. The only solution would be to replace both key fobs and reprogram them for my car, which would cost over $500. I told the Service Agent I couldn’t afford that right now, and that I would find a different solution. When I checked out, (three and a half hours later), I was shocked at the bill. Not only had they not rotated the tires, I was charged $235.00 for one-hour of diagnostics. I questioned the Service Agent about the tires and the $235.00 charge. He told be the tires didn’t need to be rotated. (“They are in the right place”) The $235.00 charge is the “standard fee” for diagnostics. I was never told what the “standard fee” would be. Additionally, had I approved the repair, I would have charged an additional $500.00. Basically, I waited three and a half hours for a simple oil change and paid $358.93. That’s an expensive oil change. And I didn’t get my tires rotated. I felt like I was at a small gas station in the middle of nowhere: “If you want your car back, you’ll pay anything”. I don’t appreciate being charged a “standard fee” of $235.00 without being notified in advance. The prices for service are not posted, so I shouldn’t be surprised that “standard fees” can be whatever is charged. I’m willing to overlook the $30.50 fee for “shop fees”. (A completely made-up figure used to pad the final bill) Over the years I’ve learned that you trust a service department until you can’t. I can no longer trust Coast GMC with my service. Charging outrageous fees might make you more profit in the short term. But charging “surprise fees” to loyal customers is not a smart business move. I will find another service option. More
