The day my mother was taken too soon on September 11, 2001 (unrelated), passing a kidney stone, and buying a new car at Brandon Tomes Volkswagen McKinney were three of the most painful, frustrating, and 2001 (unrelated), passing a kidney stone, and buying a new car at Brandon Tomes Volkswagen McKinney were three of the most painful, frustrating, and tragic moments of my life. At first glance, everything’s fine. Then you walk in. A sea of sales people standing around on their phones with a few somewhat-important-looking ones in a glass box. They collectively feel the air brush against their khakis as they all glance up, put on the least sincere smiles, and extend their hands to greet you. My guy seemed fine - just trying to do his job and all. We test drove a car, talked price and payments, and sort of came to an agreement and then I left. Mostly to grab some lunch as the one thing Mom taught 8 year old me was that you don’t buy things on an empty stomach. Later that day I put my nonrefundable $1000 reserve fee down as the correct color of the car I wanted was still in transit. This is where things start to go awry. 2 weeks later the phone rings and you’re told that the car isn’t here yet but it’s finally on the way and you can come sign the financing paperwork and pay the down payment. The “fun” part. You walk in, check in hand, and a different salesperson comes and takes the check before you can really understand what’s happening. He walks away to the glass office. Then you’re whisked away to the back office to sign the paperwork. Remember that $1000 that you paid them previously? Well, they lost it. You’re then left alone in the finance guy’s office while he’s looking for the receipt (they find it). You should have walked out right here. But you don’t because you like the car. You want the car. The paperwork comes across the electronic screen: the payment is double what you’d previously discussed. We all know dealership financing is a scam but double? You raise concerns and they “find a better rate” but still nothing Mom would be proud of (and the kidney stone was definitely on the dealership’s side). The numbers don’t exactly match up with what you agreed to but it’s not that much more and you have work in a bit so you’re sort of in a rush to get on with your day because why is this the only buying process that takes all day? So, you sign. You ask for copies since it’s a contract. You’re assured that the copies will be in the car when you pick it up. Huh? Okay, I guess? Isn’t that illegal? The car arrives a week later. They hand you the keys and you’re on your way! Yay! Except…you still don’t have your paperwork. “Didn’t you get a USB drive with them when you signed?” No… “I’ll handle it.” You leave with your new car with hopes one day you might get to see a copy of what they had you sign. Only to realize they never filled it up with gas. You go back. Oh, and the tint (that you never even asked for) has bubbles in it so you try to contact your salesperson about getting it redone and they ignore you because their commission check has already cleared. You go back again to talk to a manager. Somewhere in all of this they finally send you your paperwork via email a full TWELVE days after you signed (and FIVE after you’ve had the car). You set a time to get it re-tinted and are told to be prepared to hang out for a few hours while they redo it. You go back, again, at your scheduled time. But nobody even knew you were coming despite prior conversations. They inform you that they’re going to put you in a loaner because it’s going to take all day - not a few hours. After 3 hours of waiting around you finally get to leave - praying that this is the second to last time you’ll ever have to step foot in this godforsaken establishment. You pick up your car the next day. The tint is even worse than before. A different manager comes out and hands you a business card with a “direct number” that doesn’t work on it and a week later they mail you a check to have the tint redone elsewhere. Mom would be disappointed. More
