I recently purchased a BMW M240i xDrive that was listed for around $30,000. During the buying process, the dealership told me the struts were bad—but since I was buying the car, they said they would return for around $30,000. During the buying process, the dealership told me the struts were bad—but since I was buying the car, they said they would return the replacement struts they had already ordered. This struck me as odd. Why return the parts that would fix a known issue just because I was buying the vehicle? Despite my hesitation, I went ahead with the purchase. Later, I had the car inspected at an independent shop. They discovered the steering rack had internal wear (it was clunking) and that three out of the four wheels were cracked and had been welded—a dangerous and undisclosed issue. When I confronted the dealership, they admitted they had previously ordered both the wheels and struts, but had returned them. They said they would reorder the wheels and install them for free—which they did. However, the struts were never replaced or offered again. While I appreciate that they eventually replaced the damaged wheels, the fact that I was sold a car with blown struts, a clunking steering rack, and undisclosed, unsafe wheel repairs leaves me feeling misled. Is it common practice for dealerships to return replacement parts and not disclose all known issues once a customer agrees to pay full price? It certainly doesn’t feel like good business. More
