Update to Review: Mike McNicholas, the General Manager, Update to Review: Mike McNicholas, the General Manager, called after writing my initial review to personally apologize for the experience I had and Update to Review: Mike McNicholas, the General Manager, called after writing my initial review to personally apologize for the experience I had and clear some details up with me, and is refunding me the $250, which I was not expecting at all. Most importantly, he said he would sit down with the Sales Manager to go over the lease buyout process and issues surrounding the customer service experience I had that day. He was a very pleasant guy to speak with, and I’m happy that a solution has been found. My wife and I went in to this dealership after being referred from Toyota Financial’s website to do a lease buyout on our 2018 Corolla. I also brought the car in the same day for a 30,000 mile service. I’ll break this review down between service and sales since I got the *pleasure* to experience both in the same day. TL;DR, this was my first and last visit to this dealer. Service: If you’ve ever been into a Toyota Dealership in the past for a service appointment, this one is no different. Drive into the bay, walk in, and talk to the guys for your appointment. My service advisor was Louis Chung. He was a pretty nice guy, no complaints about him specifically. What really got me was the price for a 30,000 service which cost a little over $600. That was broken down into an oil change ($95.21 - ripoff), changing cabin and engine air filter ($98.98 - ripoff, just do it yourself), brake fluid replacement ($149.99 - higher than the national average cost to do this), wheel alignment ($119.95, which isn’t terrible, not great), an assurance plan that I don’t recall agreeing to pay for $35, fuel system cleaner ($42.99), and various other “checks and inspections” that is mostly them looking at a part for 2 seconds and moving on. I felt the prices for these were very high, so I recommend finding a trusted independent mechanic in the area to do these things. I know that’s what I will be doing in the future. When I went to pickup the car they left the interior very dirty. There were dirt/grease stains on the seats that need to be cleaned out, and they said they did a complimentary wash, but it looks like they just sprayed it with a garden hose and called it a day without it even drying. Sales: For the sales part of the transaction, we worked with Jonathan Milbourn who was very pleasant with us. I had absolutely no problems with him as he was very accommodating and asked us if we needed anything to drink such as water/coffee. Since this was a lease buyout, the buyout price of the car was set in stone 3 years ago before anyone predicted COVID-19 and how the used car market would react, so we got a pretty stellar deal on this car by buying it at about half of its true retail value. However, on the purchase quote they gave us, they presented us with a $250 charge for a State Inspection. Excuse me, what!? $250 for an inspection that, by Virginia law states that car inspections may not be more than $20. I was quite upset about this and the Sales Manager, William King, came over to talk with us. I explained to him that a state inspection shouldn’t cost more than $20. To top it off, when we went in on 7/17/21, they couldn’t even perform inspections since they got shut down there. We went back and forth for a little bit, but he was persistent and kept making up excuses of how it’s a “simple business transaction” and another, that many customers “find that it’s a convenience for them to get their car inspected here.” Well, I didn’t find it very convenient how they are literally breaking the law and charging me $250 for a state inspection. He said they are required by law to inspect all cars before being sold, but does he also fail to realize it’s the law to charge only $20 for an inspection? I took a photo of the document as well with the line item “State Inspection… $250” for records as I very well end up filing a complaint with the appropriate government entity. Well, Mr. King wasn’t too happy with us and got up and left in a huff and proceeded to ignore us for the the rest of our time there. Jonathan remained pleasant and civil during this as I imagine he was just doing his job and he wasn’t too sure when we asked initially what this State Inspection comprised of. I don’t blame Jonathan at all as he seemed unaware of what these charges were, but Mr. King was downright rude and truly fulfills his role as a used car sales manager by trying to come up with excuses on extra charges. The finance manager was very pleasant and we talked about music, bands, and skiing, and that part didn’t take too long, but overall the buying experience of our lease took about 3 hours in total. When we left Mr. King was by the entrance and as we made eye contact, he said not a single word to us. He alone left a bad taste in my mouth and I don’t plan on ever coming back to that dealership because of him.. I’m very upset about the extra $230 they charged for the State Inspection and hope they can make this right, because I felt like my experience in that dealership was simply unacceptable. To the dealership, do better. And to those reading, just go somewhere else. More
