Jay, the manager, however, gave me a real hard sell on a warranty extension, which was not at all enjoyable, and which you should be prepared for. Details: Deesa sat me down for a quick chat about what my budget was, what I was looking for in a car, and characteristics I disliked. We then strolled the lot (maybe 100 cars?), with Deesa pointing out cars she thought I'd be interested in, and me commenting on various cars in the lot (both positive and negative). I test-drove three, and fell in love with a car (a Fiat) that did not actually meet my stated criteria (color I hadn't listed). I drove that one twice. Deesa suggested that if I was really serious about it I should take it to a my mechanic of choice to be checked out, which I did that same day, and which gave me more confidence about the car. I'll skip some other details here, but I had a great experience with Deesa: if you're in the market for a used car, go down and see her! The one negative thing: the hard sell from the manager Jay re a warranty extension on my car, which was 2014. He tried to get me to buy a warranty that cost $4K on a $13K car - absurd. I told him I wasn't going to decide on the spot, and went out to the lounge. I found that Consumer Reports says 55% of buyers of such warranties never use them, and only 25% say they would buy one again. When I told him I wasn't buying one he looked at me like a teacher disappointed in his student, and continued trying to sell until I politely told him my decision was final. **Ask when you make the appointment to sign all the papers on your car (e.g., what you're putting down and how much you're taking as a loan and from whom) about whether there are any other decisions you will be expected to make on that day, including extended warranties.** I'd ask for the info on the plans ahead of "signing day," do your research, and be ready for this. More
