This out-of-state buyer feels cheated I'm a 60+ year old Michigan resident and have bought cars from other states many times including Ohio, N.C. and Virginia. My experience with this dealership was by far the worst.car-buying experience I made deal for Highlander through email correspondence and had detailed statement of costs and fees. This was a cash purchase, so I arrived at dealership with certified check, certificate of Michigan insurance for the car, and Michigan registration and plates to be transferred. The dealership knew that I lived 4 hours away from the dealership and I arrived early for the closing appointment. In my experience, a cash purchase where I had done all the advance paperwork should have required a fairly short closing. However, after presenting all of the paperwork and confirming that the car was as depicted in the pictures, we sat in the dealership showroom for over 4 hours before the "closer" invited us into his office for approximately 5 minutes of paperwork. During this closing, we were advised that they would be charging an additional fee of several hundred dollars for their contractor who would handle the taxes and registration in Michigan. The late hour and building snowstorm had us worried about the trip home so we only made a small protest about the additional fee. A few weeks later, we received a letter in the mail from the dealership with a check payable to Michigan purportedly for the registration transfer (which we previously paid to the dealership) and a letter instructing us to go to the Michigan SOS to register the new car. We received absolutely no service in exchange for the several hundred dollar fee. To make matters worse, when we registered the new car, we discovered that the dealership had overcharged us for the Michigan sales tax and underpaid Michigan for the sales tax. In addition, the dealership had not forwarded the entire registration fee that we paid it to the State of Michigan. This all required us to fork over several hundred dollars more to get the car registered. During several contacts with the dealership (primarily Nicolette Lewis), we were told that our request for reimbursement needed the attention of a manager who would get back to us. That never happened. We think the dealership had concluded that we would eventually decide that a couple of hundred dollars wasn't worth the hassle of bringing the fight to Illinois and didn't care about an out-of-state customer who probably wouldn't be a return customer anyway. More
