I bought a used Hyundai Santa Fe with about 95,000 miles on it. The salesman informed me that the finance company required the lessee (me) to purchase an extended warranty. He recommended the two year war on it. The salesman informed me that the finance company required the lessee (me) to purchase an extended warranty. He recommended the two year warranty for about $2,000. I was excited when I left the dealership because this was my first SUV. First, I had to get gas because the salesman informed me that they don't even fill up the gas tank because it costs too much. That should have been a red flag. After I got the car home, I noticed the the "check engine" light was on. It was the oxygen sensor. I could not take the car in because the check engine light kept going on and off (It's how O2 sensors work, it was clearly defective, but you have to wait until the check engine light stays on for an extended time, so it gets diagnosed as faulty.) The second day that I had the car, the passenger door handle came off; I opened the the door and it just snapped off! I called up the store and spoke to the salesman and he told me that it was not covered under the warranty. I figured I can live without it. After about one year of driving with it, the check engine light was finally on for good, so I brought it in to the dealership. He said that it was not covered under the warranty, but he'll be a nice guy and claim it was the alternator, to fix it. So he fixed it. When I went to pick up the car, all of the lights were off. I drove about a half hour and the check engine light was on, AGAIN. (On a side note, I live about 45 minutes away from the dealership and I work and go to school, both full time, so I do not have a lot of spare time and I need my car.) When I took my car to Pep Boys to diagnose the problem, the showed me the code on the OBD2 - the machine that hooks up tp the port in your car, usually under the steering wheel - and it was the idle control valve. When I took the car back to the dealership, they said they would not fix it because it wasn't under warranty. Within the year that I was driving the car, the driver side handle came off. Now, to open my car door, it's about a 30 second process that should only take half a second. They told me they would fix it if I brought them customers and proceeded to give me about five business cards. I called up the finance company and they said that they do not require any extended warranty and that the warranty that I purchased was only good up to 100,000 miles (remember, I bought the car with 95,000 miles on it.) My warranty basically expired after 4 months of having the car, which I was not informed. In all I am going to end up losing $2000 (no good warranty,) $400 (idle control valve,) $100 (door handles and installation,) $400 (interest in warranty.) It's about $3000 which comes to about 10 extra months of payments. My 4 year lease should have been 3 years. This was my first time buying a car and I learned my lesson the hard way. DO NOT purchase a vehicle from this dealership. More
