As a top-notch off-roader, the Wrangler 4xe can get down and dirty or as rough and rocky as the rest of its stablemates. It will wade through water 30 inches deep. But this 4-door Jeep variant is also a plug-in hybrid with an electric-only range of 22 miles.Although plenty of road-going vehicles are adding electrification to their drivetrains, it's still a new thing with real sport utility vehicles that can do all the tough off-roading stuff. This is only the 4xe's second year of existence, while the Wrangler is in its fourth generation (which debuted for the 2018 model year) and has an impressive heritage dating back to World War II.The 4xe is also the only mainstream plug-in hybrid SUV with any appreciable off-road ability. Jeep uses a 'four by E' pronunciation for this midsize SUV, a play on the 4×4 term.
