Seller's Comments
*1993 Mazda RX7 R1*The Wankel rotary engine is a unique piston-less setup that was first fitted to a car more than 70 years ago. Although it wasn't a concept that caught on with many manufacturers, Mazda embraced the design and worked on perfecting it over decades. With the introduction of the FD RX7 in 1991, Mazda had extracted a remarkable amount of power from a twin-rotor variant of the Wankel engine, with the addition of two sequential turbochargers. This 1993 Mazda RX7 R1 is a stunning example that shows just 30,672 miles and has been under the care of just two owners from new.The FD RX7 is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars to ever come out of Japan, and this example in its striking Vintage Red paint shows exactly why. Penned in Mazda's Irvine, CA Design Center, the RX7 could easily have been mistaken for a Ferrari or Aston Martin until you heard it drive by. As an R1 package equipped car, this RX7 was intended as the more driver-focused variant in the lineup, eschewing things like leather interior, in favor of a lower curb weight. Cars with this option package have become quite sought after thanks to its rarity and a number of unique features that were included with it. From the exterior, the most obvious changes are the rear decklid spoiler and front lower air dam which help with aerodynamics, and funnel air from into the added oil cooler up front. The 5-spoke wheels are simple in design, yet very lightweight and sit in front of 4-wheel disc brakes. The interior is a classic dual-cockpit style design, with everything situated towards the driver. As an R1 package, the seats are covered in a combination of black cloth and Alcantara but the steering wheel, shifter and handbrake are all leather wrapped. When you get into the driver's seat, a large tachometer is the gauge situated right in front of you with its 8,000+ RPM redline and a clear 160 mph speedometer sitting to the right of it.Powering the RX7 is that legendary Wankel twin-rotor motor with twin-sequential turbochargers. Although the engine only displaces 1.3-liters, it produces 255 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque and thanks to the unique sequential turbo system, the first turbo begins to spool at just 1,800 rpm which helps fill in low-end torque, while the second larger turbo comes in at 4,500 rpm for top end power. This is run through a 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. With the R1 package, a special Bilstein suspension was added which is known to make the car feel especially planted and with 50/50 weight distribution, makes this car a tremendous handler.Over the years, many of these RX7s have landed in the hands of enthusiasts who modify them for more peak power or to alter the aesthetics. Finding one in nice, stock condition is no small feat, but finding one that has just over 30,000 miles and the R1 package in original condition is truly a unicorn. Driving an RX7 is an experience that every enthusiast should have and if you want to experience the best, l
