Introduced in 1975 as the Type 930, but more widely known as the Turbo, the Porsche 911 Turbo marked a significant shift in the brands identity. Known for producing cars with exceptional handling, Porsche ventured into new territory with the Turbo, offering raw power alongside the precision driving experience it was already famed for. By 1976, the 911 Turbo made its U.S. debut, boasting 300 horsepower, a larger 3.3-liter engine, and the addition of an air-to-air intercooler.
The 930 wasnt just about powerit was a visual statement. Its distinctive 'whale tail' spoiler and aggressive stance made it instantly recognizable, and it quickly became a symbol of Porsche's ability to blend performance and design. Building on their success in turbocharging race cars like the 917/10 and 917/30, Porsche's first production turbocharged car was born. This laid the groundwork for racing dominance in models like the 934 and 935, which carried Porsche to numerous endurance racing victories. The 911 Turbo wasn't just a carit was the beginning of a new chapter in Porsches performance legacy.
Now offered for sale, Blue Chip is proud to present this 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, refinished in Venetian Blue over a Red Leather interior. This example underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2017, during which the car was completely disassembled, with the body refinished in Venetian Blue and fitted with a new windshield, moldings, trims, and seals. The undercarriage was treated to a full restoration as well, with the subframe bead-blasted and painted to factory specifications, and finished with an undercoat for protection.
The interior received significant attention, with high-quality leather re-covering the seats, dashboard, door panels, and roof. Additional new elements include the headliner, sunroof, rear parcel tray, and carpet moldings, while a Wurth sound-deadening mat was added under the new carpet for improved cabin acoustics.
The car is powered by a rebuilt ProtoTech Stage 3 3.3-liter engine, featuring upgrades such as Mahle pistons, a custom Garrett Hybrid GT40 turbo, and a Motronic engine management system. The extensive rebuild also included new timing chains, valve springs, and a high-clamp-load clutch. The fuel system was overhauled with twin Bosch 962 fuel pumps and a new fuel tank, while the cooling system benefits from a custom 54-row oil cooler.
Handling and braking have been improved with a custom suspension system and upgraded Brembo brakes, featuring 12-inch front and 13-inch rear vented rotors. The 4-speed manual transmission has been updated with a limited-slip differential and rebuilt axles, enhancing drivability and performance.
Now displaying 43,864 miles on the odometer, this 930 Turbo offers a careful balance of classic Porsche design and modern performance enhancements, making it a well-rounded example of the iconic model.
