*1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Sport Coupe Tribute*® The Chevrolet Chevelle optioned with the SS396 package was one of the highest performing cars built by General Motors in 1966 and remains extremely sought after and valuable. Finding a great, real SS396 can be costly and difficult, but building a more âordinaryâ Chevelle into a tribute to this iconic package is also an appealing option. That is what happened with this 1966 Chevelle - starting its life as a Chevelle Malibu, the SS trim was added around the vehicle, and the smaller-displacement V8 was swapped out in favor of a 454 ci unit that puts the original SS396 engine to shame.® This 1966 Chevelle Sport Coupe is finished in Regal Red over Black vinyl interior and benefits from a complete restoration by a previous owner in the 2010s. Originally Madeira Maroon, this car received a high quality repaint in this eye-catching shade of bright red, at which time, the SS-style badging was fitted around the vehicle, along with the SS-specific hood vents. The only thing that gives away the modifications on this car is the set of US Mags wheels, which are 18-inches in diameter at the front and 20-inches at the rear and sit in front of a set of 4-wheel disc brakes.® The interior is wrapped in black vinyl, with a pair of bucket seats in front, and a bench at the rear. Slide into the driverâs seat and you are met by a thin-rimmed 2-spoke steering wheel, that frames a horizontal 120-mph speedometer, and a Sun Super Tach is fitted on the steering column. Otherwise, the interior appears very stock with an original-style radio, and a transmission-tunnel mounted analog clock that sits just in front of the shifter.® When you pop the hood, you are met with an engine that looks pretty original and even has a 396 badge on the chrome air cleaner lid. But in reality, this Chevelle has been fitted with an enormous 454ci V8 that is rated for 375 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. Fueling is provided by a Holley 750 double-pumper carburetor that sits on an aluminum intake, and Pertronix electronic ignition provides good spark and keeps the car reliable. A set of headers have been installed that run into a 3-inch stainless steel exhaust, giving this car the muscle car sound everyone wants on a car like this. The cooling system has also been improved thanks to a new expansion tank and a pair of electric fans. This powerplant is connected to a 4-speed Muncie M22 âRock Crusherâ manual gearbox, which sends power to the rear wheels via a 10-bolt rear axle. Under current ownership, considerable sorting has been performed on this Chevelle to make it both reliable and easier to use every day.® If you are looking for a muscle car to drive and enjoy, this Chevelle checks pretty much all the boxes. Fantastic looks, a recent restoration with subsequent mechanical sorting, and best of all, a massive V8 that produces big power and a thrilling noise every time you hit the gas. And best of all, given this is a tribute car, y
