For 1952, the company released the more powerful 1500, which coincided with a series of updates to the car. New bumpers, a curved, one-piece glass windshield, and, in 1953, a fully synchronized transmission were some of the most notable changes. As ever, the newer car proved more comfortable than the preceding model. By 1955, with the release of the 356 A looming, Porsche began branding 356s intended for the American market as Continental. This was largely due to Max Hoffman, a major official importer of the brand, desiring to sell a car with a name instead of a designation. Unfortunately, Ford was quick to threaten legal action and the name was dropped in favor of European for the 1956 model year. Today, the one-year-only 356 Continental is one of the most intriguing 'Pre-A' models for its rarity and pleasant blend of luxury and performance.
